Traveling for the holidays and dreading that long car trip? This week's spotlight, The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy, is a perfect story for the whole family to listen to while stuck on a long car ride. What is this story about? Well, the title sums it up pretty well - while on their summer vacation, four sisters meet the boy living next door to their rented cottage and have all sorts of adventures together. As much as they try to stay out of trouble, trouble just seems to follow them around.

If you like this book, there are currently two others in the series, The Penderwicks on Gardham Street, and The Penderwicks at Point Mouette.

This week's spotlight by Holly Meade, is all about how scary it is to try something new. In it, a little bird is trying to decide if he is brave enough to try flying for the first time. With it's wonderful language, and beautiful illustrations, this picture book is definitely worth a look - both by kids and adults!

Did you love the Harry Potter books? Have you read everything by Rick Riordan and are anxiously awaiting more? Then here's a new series for you - John Stephen's The Books of Beginning. The first book, The Emerald Atlas, just came out this fall and it is definitely worth a read. It has a perfect blend of magic, suspense, and adventure and will keep you on your toes. I promise, once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down!

For those of you who like listening to books, The Emerald Atlas is read by the same man (Jim Dale) who did the Harry Potter books. If you don't know who Jim Dale is, believe me, listening to anything he reads is a real treat.

Okay, I'll admit, this "Weekly Spotlight" hasn't been very "weekly" lately. The summer was so busy here at the library that the blog got overlooked. But the school year has started now, and with that, I'm going to do my best to be more regular with my posts.

This week's spotlight is on The Lemonade Crime by Jacqueline Davies. Did you know that the 2011 Nutmeg winner, The Lemonade War has a sequel? Especially for those of you who voted for The Lemonade War, this book is definitely worth checking out. Evan and Jessie are back - and this time they are holding a trial for one of their classmates. Is Scott Spencer really a thief? You'll just have to read and find out!

Summer Wrap-Up

Wow, was this a busy summer in the Children's Library!

Over 1,200 kids participated in our Summer Reading program (wow!), and everyone did a FANTASTIC job with all of their reading! This was the first year we ran a program online. And even though it wasn't perfect, it seems that most of you liked this new feature. We do want to know what you thought of the program. Especially if you have any comments on how we did, or suggestions to make the program better, please take our survey, or leave your thoughts in the comments.

Wallingford is definitely a town full of great readers! Thanks to all of you for helping us make this summer a success!

Summer Reading

School's out, and you know what that means! It's time for the Wallingford Public Library's Summer Reading Program to begin. Join us this year as we explore the wonders of Ancient Egypt. We've got another amazing game board all ready for you - so if you haven't already done so, make sure to register today!

Sign-ups are all online this year - to sign-up from home, click here. Or, stop by the Children's Library and we will be happy to help you. (Please note: your USERNAME will be your library card number, and your PASSWORD is the last four digits of your phone number.) Once you're signed up, start logging the books you've read and make sure to stop in the library to take your turns on the Ancient Egypt Gameboard. Or, for kids who aren't in school yet, you will be helping us build a giant pyramid in the middle of the Children's Library.

A pig parade really is a terrible idea. Why? Well, for one thing, pigs hate to march in straight lines. To find out all the other reasons (and there are a lot) why you shouldn't try to have a pig parade, take a look at Michael Ian Black's very funny new picture book. I promise it will keep you giggling from the first page to the last!

Looking for a good mystery? Then be sure to check out Doreen Cronin's new book, The Trouble with Chickens. This hilarious chapter book stars J.J. Tully, a retired search-and-rescue dog who is just trying to get a little peace and quiet at his new home on a farm. Instead, he is roped into helping a mother hen search for her two missing chicks. She is convinced they have been kidnapped, and for the price of a cheeseburger, J. J. Tully is on the case.

Be a Summer Volunteer!

If you are a Wallingford student going into grades 5, 6, or 7 in the fall of 2011, you are eligible to volunteer to help us run our summer reading program in the Children’s Library. This summer kids will be exploring the wonders of Ancient Egypt and we will have a fantastic new game setup as well as an online program. We are expecting many enthusiastic players and we need our volunteers to help us run the game.

Volunteers commit to working two hours each day for one week. If you have the time to commit, please print an application or pick up one at the library. Read the application carefully with your parent or guardian, fill it out and return to us by June 8.

I know many of you have been anxiously waiting for Rick Riordan's next book, The Throne of Fire, and I'm happy to say that the Wallingford Children's Library now has 5 copies in the collection. Two of these are in our "Express Collection," so if the waiting list is just too long for you, take a glance at our Express Shelf the next time you are in the library - it might just be your lucky day! (Don't know about our Express Collection? Just ask at the Children's Desk.)

Harry Potter Mania

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 has finally arrived on DVD! If you are like me, whenever a new movie in the series comes out, it makes me want to go back and re-read the book that movie was based on. For those of you who have read all the books before and are looking for something a little different, I highly recommend checking out our audiobook versions. The narrator, Jim Dale, has done a fantastic job with them, and you will find yourself falling in love with the books all over again.

And just a few questions to think about:

Poor Michael K. has only been in his new school for 20 minutes and all ready he's in trouble. All he wanted to do was to make some friends and fit in, but the teacher stuck him with the two class weirdos: Jennifer and Bob. Jennifer likes to eat pencils, and both kids keep spouting out slogans from TV commercials. Either these kids really are just weird, or they are aliens from another planet. Here's an oldie, but goodie. Animalia is an ABC book - with a twist. Along with stunning illustrations for each letter of the alphabet, a little boy is hidden in the picture on each page. Look carefully! Sometimes all you will be able to see is a hand or a leg. For those of you interested in playing a little bit of "Where's Waldo?" while learning your alphabet - this book is definitely for you!

Are you a guy? Think you don't like poetry? Then I highly recommend taking a look at Guyku: A Year of Haiku for Boys. I guarantee you will be proven wrong.

What is haiku, you ask? Haiku poems are short observations about nature. Each poem is only three lines long - with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. In Guyku, Bob Raczka has included poems about all of his favorite things to do when he was a boy: splashing in mud puddles, collecting bugs, climbing trees, etc. Here's one of my favorites:

If this puddle could
talk, I think it would tell me
to splash my sister.

Calling all fairy-tale lovers! If you haven't read anything by Gail Carson Levine, I highly recommend checking her out. The author of the popular Ella Enchanted, Levine has written several other wonderful novels in the fairy-tale realms.

In Fairest, Aza lives in a world that values beauty and a person's singing ability above all else. Aza has a beautiful voice, but she is big-boned and clumsy. Because she isn't considered to be "pretty"she is usually ignored. And then suddenly Aza is pushed into the spotlight and the fate of her country lies in her hands. In this fast-paced adventure, set off with Aza as she tries to save her country. And maybe, just maybe, she'll find love and acceptance along the way.

Preschool Education and Information Fair

This Saturday, January 22nd, we are having a Preschool Education and Information Fair here at the WPL. This fair is designed to help parents make the tough decision on just which preschool is right for their child. Many of Wallingford's Preschools will be in attendance, along with several other youth agencies. If you have a child who is almost ready for preschool, drop on by to take a look!

The fair will run from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and is being held in our big Community Room downstairs. (If you come in through the back entrance you won't be able to miss it.) Stop by the Children's Desk, or give us a call for more information.

Are you a Percy Jackson fan? Are you looking for more stories about the Greek gods & goddesses? Then take a look at George O'Connor's Olympians series. Two books are out so far (Athena: Grey-Eyed Goddess and Zeus: King of the Gods), and a third book about Hera is scheduled to be released in July. These books are written as graphic novels - which means they look a lot like a comic book. Chock full of adventure, these exciting stories will leave you begging for more.

Early Childhood Education & Information Fair

Set up like the Wimpy Kid books, Ellie McDoodle is part novel, and part graphic novel. In the first book, Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel, Ellie writes and doodles about all of her adventures on forced camping trip with her aunt, uncle, cousin, and baby brother.

The Lost Hero: Discussion Questions

Chess Club Special Event

Calling all Chess Lovers! On Saturday, November 6th at 10:00 a.m. the Wallingford Youth Chess Club will be hosting a Simultaneous Exhibition, featuring Dr. Nelson Castaneda. Dr. Castaneda, a FIDE Master in Chess, has a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Indiana University and is a Professor of Mathematics at Central Ct. State University. He is also the current CT State Chess Champion. Dr. Castaneda has given the simultaneous exhibition at the Library for the last two years and is looking forward to meeting with the Wallingford Youth Chess Club again. This is a fascinating event and all who are interested in the game of chess are invited to attend.

This event does require registration, and is open to all Wallingford students grades K-12. You can register by going online or by contacting the Wallingford Children's Library.

Looking for Something Spooky?

With Halloween just around the corner, I'm sure there are many of you out there looking for something just a little bit spooky to read. From the slightly scary to the all out creepy, the Children's Library has something for everyone. I won't lie, I am not a fan of scary books, so I'm going to rely on all of you to help come up with some truly spooky suggestions. Please post your recommendations in the comments!

For those of you out there like me who aren't so keen on being scared out of your skin, I have a great book recommendation for you: Dear Dracula by Joshua Williamson and Vincente Navarrete. What happens when Sam, a huge fan of Dracula, decides to write Dracula a letter? Dracula shows up on his doorstep ready to turn Sam into a real live vampire, of course. This silly, funny, graphic novel (that means it reads like a comic book) is chock full of great artwork and is the perfect book to help you get in the mood for Halloween!

Parent-Child Activity Center

The Wallingford Children's Library has a fantastic new service to offer! If you have been to the library in the last couple of weeks, you may have noticed a new piece of furniture with a "Coming Soon!" sign on it. We are happy to announce that our new Parent-Child Activity Center is now up and running!

Located where the kitchen used to be (don't worry, we still have the kitchen - it's just now on the other side of the train), this Activity Center is specifically designed for kids ages 3-5 to use with their parent or accompanying grown-up. Right now, we are featuring activities to help with the social and emotional skills that are so important in starting school. The center has nine bins and each bin features a different skill. Included in each bin are tips for parents for things to do at home, and at least one activity to help develop the skill. Keep checking back as the activities in the bins will change!

The activities and information for parents included in the center have been adapted from the book, "Seven Skills for School Success: Activities to Develop Social and Emotional Intelligence in Young Children" by Pamela Byrne Schiller. Copies of this book are available for check out from our library.

Convinced that you will never find a book that you like? The Wallingford Children's Library is starting a new book club just for you! We promise, this is not just any old book club. Based on Jon Scieszka's Guys Read Initiative, this club is designed to help every boy find a book he likes to read.

Fire Safety Program

Grab your helmet and come meet a real Wallingford Firefighter!

On Monday, October 4th, instead of our regular Preschool Story Time, we will be having a special program all about fire safety. This program is for kids ages 3 to 5, and does require registration. Please stop by or give us a call to sign your child up! After the program, kids will have a chance to see one of Wallingford's fire engines up close.

Please note: this special program begins at 10:30, instead of the regular time of 10:00.

Itty Bitty Babies
Thursdays @ 1:30 p.m., September 16th - November 4th
This story time is especially designed for our youngest patrons - anyone up to 12 months old. Older siblings are always welcome!

Waddling Ones
Thursdays @ 10:00 a.m., September 16th - November 4th
Designed for graduates of Itty Bitty Babies, this story time is for children 13-24 months.

Musical Mother Goose
Tuesdays @ 6:30 p.m., September 14th - November 9th
Wednesdays @ 10:00 a.m., September 15th - November 10th
This lively, interactive program is geared towards children 1-2 years old and their caregivers. As this program is extremely popular, please remember to bring proof of Wallingford residency with you, and to arrive early.

Preschool Story Time
Mondays @ 10:00 a.m., September 13th - November 8th (except October 4th & 11th)

Thanks for a Great Summer!

Today marks the official end to summer vacation. With school starting today, I wanted to take a moment and thank all of you for helping make this such a great summer. Over 1,000 kids played on our Ghoulish Game Board, and over 250 Wallingford families participated in our Ice Cream for Books program. That's a lot of reading! Beyond that, we had amazing turn outs at all of our other programs. We hope that that means you had just as much fun here at the library as we did!

I know that many of you will soon be swamped with schoolwork and after school activities, but before that happens, I just have to ask: Of all the books you read this summer, which one was your favorite? Or, if you're like me and just can't choose, what were a few favorites? Personally, I was thrilled to (finally) get through the end of the Percy Jackson series - talk about heart-pounding, nail-biting adventure! I just couldn't put "The Last Olympian" down. I also discovered the very funny "Magic Pickle" books, and had a chance to read the latest in the Clementine series, "Clementine, the Friend of the Week." The Clementine books are one of my favorite series, and are always good for a chuckle.

Monarch Magic

We had a GREAT turnout for our Monarch Magic program this morning. Thanks to all of you who came, and helped to make the program a success. We now have a display in the Children's Library of many of the caterpillars from this morning's program. We will be watching over the next few weeks as these caterpillars change into butterflies. Make sure to stop in to watch this amazing process!

Request for Legos

Hi All,

Recently, we have gotten many requests to start up a Lego Club here at the library. This is something we would love to do, and are hoping that we might be able to start up a club soon. (I stress the word "might.") Before the club can actually start though, there is something very important that we need: Legos! The library has purchased some, but as many of you probably know, Legos are very expensive. In order to start a club, we definitely need more. Unfortunately, we really can't afford to buy all that we would need.

Here is where we need your help: if any of you out there have Legos lying around that you no longer need or want, please consider donating them to the library. I promise they will be put to good use, and they will make some of our school-age patrons very, very happy!

Have your kids been playing our Ghoulish Game Board this summer? If so, please note that the game board will disappear this Friday, August 6th. If your kids won't be finished by Friday, and they have been playing, please stop by the Children's Info Desk and speak to one of the Librarians.

We can arrange for you to keep your kids reading - and for them to collect their prizes at home! We will give you all the prizes and certificates, and you can give them to your children when you feel they would have done enough reading to finish the game.

Help Build Our Collection!

Here at the WPL, we Children's Librarians do our very best to buy all the books that we think Wallingford kids will enjoy. I have a secret to share with you: we aren't perfect. Shocking, I know. We buy what we can, but I guarantee you that there are books we have missed. And this is where we need your help - please let us know if there is a book you want to read, but have not been able to find in our library. I'm talking about things we don't already own, not items that we have but are always checked out. (I know you all want to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but unfortunately, we can only afford to buy so many copies!) This is your library, so it is extremely important for us to make sure the collection has everything you need and want. If you have suggestions for us - whether it is a picture book, chapter book, or something nonfiction, please let us know in the comments.

Who is that new librarian?

If you've stopped in the Children's Library anytime over the last month or so, you may have noticed a new face. Wondering who that might be? Well, I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself. I am Kari Hammond, the new Preschool Specialist. I've come to Wallingford by way of the public library in Lowell, Massachusetts, and am very excited to have joined the team. Next time you're in the library, please make sure to say hi! I can't wait to meet and get to know all of you.

I have also taken over the task of updating the blog. (I'm also posting Children's "stuff" on Facebook, so if you have a Facebook account, be sure to check out our page.) I've gotten a few new blog posts up already, but please keep checking back as there is much more to come! Finished the Game Board?

Good for you! When you finish the game board for the first time (yes, you can play through the game twice), make sure to stop at the Children's Info Desk to pick up all of the rewards for finishing. If you have finished the game board, but didn't let us know at the desk, you can still stop in for your rewards.

For those second-time finishers out there (and I know there are a lot of you!), you can also stop at the desk to get your second raffle ticket.

So many kids have already finished this summer - CONGRATULATIONS to all of you, and keep up the good work!

WPL Summer Reading

There are only two weeks left in our Summer Reading Program! I can't believe how fast the summer has gone by. If you haven't signed up for our program yet, don't worry! You are certainly welcome to sign up, and can even count all that reading you've been doing this summer. (You have been reading, right?) Anything you've read since June 22nd counts.

We have two amazing programs this summer:

Haunt Your Library!
This program is geared to all of our school-aged friends out there. This summer's game board has a little bit of a spooky (but not too spooky!) theme to it. For every half-hour of reading that you do, you will earn one turn on the game board. The goal? To earn 9 unlucky charms to make a charm bracelet. (There are also other fun goodies you can earn along the way, and some special rewards you will get for finishing.)

Ice Cream for Books!
Not in school yet? Then this program is for you! Ice Cream for Books is a family program, so if you have brothers and sisters who are also too young to play the game board, you can work together - anything that gets read to you counts too. Earn scoops to add to our giant ice cream cone, along with a bunch of other goodies.

100 Books Every Child Should Hear....

This is one for the parents, adults, and caregivers who work, live with or care for young children.

The WPL Children's Librarians have created a list of 100 Books Every Should Hear Before Starting School. Seems daunting, yes, but consider the fact that many kids soak in tons of books every day. So many, in fact, that 100 books is an easy objective. Sometimes it feels like 100 because you end up reading a favorite over and over, and that's ok too-it's all part and parcel of the love of reading.

So if you're wondering what good books are out there for your young children, take a look at the 100 Books Every Child Should Hear Before Starting School booklist. Ask a librarian if you need help finding these or other books.
